Tranquil Villa near sea and mountains in central Italy's Le Marche region

Casa Valentina is the perfect place if you want a tranquil holiday away from tourist crowds in the heart of traditional Italy, Le Marche is in the centre of the country, across the Apennine mountains from Tuscany, with similar rolling countryside and hill towns. But it is much less well-known and overcrowded during the holiday season. This is a marvellously unspoilt region of Italy and our house is in beautiful countryside where the people are extremely hospitable and friendly. The area is full of little known hill towns with secret art treasures hidden in their churches. Le Marche is the region where Italy's old values survive.

Once a summer residence for monks dating back hundreds of years, the tastefully restored villa is close to both sea and mountains. The ancient town of Loro Piceno nearby is the home of vino cotto, a delicious dessert wine, and the area has many excellent but inexpensive restaurants, as well as a wealth of places to visit, from old churches to mountains and beaches.

Our house is on three floors in more than an acre of land with a large garden and swimming pool surrounded by a spacious tiled area. The peace is only disturbed by birdsong and the melodic chiming of Loro Piceno's church bells on the hillside opposite the house. Beaches or the majestic Sibillini mountains are 40 minutes away. The extensive ruins of the ancient Roman city of Urbs Salvia are less than 10 minutes from the house and the area is full of hill towns as beautiful as those in Umbria and Tuscany, but less well known and developed. Art treasures wait to be discovered in ancient churches and festivals light up local towns during the summer.

There are terracotta tiles throughout the comfortable and airy house, a hand-made maple kitchen, four double and one single bedroom and three modern bathrooms plus a downstairs toilet. One hour from Ancona airport. Also accessible from Bologna, Rome, Pisa and Pescara. Many picturesque hill towns are nearby including Macerata, which hosts a renowned summer opera festival, Tolentino and Ascoli Piceno, the jewel of the Marche region.
